Haiti (and the World) Needs Our Prayers and Help

Haiti

The pictures we see of how the evolving situation in Haiti has certainly motivated much prayer and outpouring of support for the people who are fighting, sometimes literally, for their very survival. This is encouraging, but it's also sad to see just how bad things have to get in a developing country before the rest of the world takes notice and, more importantly, takes action to help. Haiti was a devastating place of poverty and hunger before the earthquakes, but I don't remember reading any articles about that in newspapers and magazines or seeing newscasters from our major media networks rushing to the island nation to shine light on conditions there. I also don't remember mega-church pastors, or even those in small local congregations, offering prayers and support for the people of Haiti. Why is that?

Don't get me wrong, the support for Haiti has been inspiring and is currently saving lives, but when it takes this kind of devastation in order to receive help,it makes you wonder about the condition of our collective human heart. I know I certainly paid no attention to Haiti and certainly offered no support of any kind - my hunch is most of you reading this now would be in that same category with me. I wonder how much more impact we could have for Christ in this world if we were already in the places experiencing the kinds of hardships the people of Haiti have experienced, even before the recent natural disasters?

I pray that while we're helping Haiti, that the people of Haiti actually help us even more by opening our eyes to poverty, hunger, and the preventable spread of disease all over the world.  If you want to help Haiti, please click here. And if you want to support the plight of people all over the world, pray for them, for the church in general, and for those who might go and walk alongside the people living in developing nations.
